Frequently asked questions about rice
How do you cook rice?
Cooking rice isn't difficult in itself, but it can be a challenge to get it perfectly right. We recommend using 1.5 dl of water per 1 dl of rice. Pour the water into a pot and bring it to a boil. When the water is boiling, add the rice and put the lid on. The rice should then cook for about 12 minutes; after that, remove the pot from the heat and let it stand for 12 minutes with the lid on.
How much rice per person?
As a general rule we recommend using 1 dl of rice per person. However, this can vary depending on what you’re using the rice for — for example, if you’re cooking rice for sushi you should instead calculate based on how many sushi rolls you want to make plus the extra needed for nigiri.
About 90–100 grams of cooked rice are used for a sushi roll. Therefore you should cook 30 g per roll you want to make. One deciliter (dl) of rice is about 90 g, and you therefore get three rolls per dl of rice you cook.
How do you make sushi rice?
Sushi rice is an art in itself and requires careful work to get it just right. First, rinse the rice until the water runs clear — this can take a few rinses. Then cook the rice according to the package instructions. Next, mix rice vinegar, salt and sugar, and fold it into the rice. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to avoid crushing the grains. Let the rice cool, then use it for sushi.
Where does rice come from?
Rice comes from many different countries and has been a central part of the diet in countries such as Thailand, China, Indonesia, Japan, India, Persia and South America. Jasmine rice primarily comes from Thailand, while basmati rice is traditionally grown in India and Pakistan.
In Japan, short-grain rice is especially popular — it's the type of rice used for sushi.
How long can cooked rice be kept?
Cooked rice can be kept in the fridge for up to four days. However, we recommend that you always smell the rice before using it again — just to make sure it hasn't gone bad.
How do you make fried rice?
Fried rice is a dish where cooked, cooled rice — perhaps from the day before — is fried in a pan with various vegetables and eggs. It can be prepared in many different ways, and the ingredients can vary greatly. Often the dish is a good way to use up some of the things left in the fridge.
Why should you rinse rice?
When you rinse rice, the water often becomes whitish — this is caused by the starch that is washed out of the rice. The more you rinse them, the less starch remains in the rice. When there is less starch in the rice, the cooked rice becomes less sticky.
