Traditionally, salted duck eggs are served with congee (rice porridge) for breakfast. But the true delicacy for many is the yolk. The yolk has a flavor that resembles a soft mashed roasted chestnut, with a salty and rich umami taste.
Salted duck egg yolks are also often used in mooncakes, pastries and dumplings.
