With a perfect balance of tangy, sweet, and salty, Banh Mi is a taste experience you should try to make at home. This guide shows you how to make an authentic Banh Mi using simple ingredients.

  • Preparation time : 40 min
  • Recipe type : Dinner

Preparation

Ingredients

  • 1 crusty baguette
  • 200 g pork tenderloin, sliced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 cucumber, sliced
  • 2 carrots, julienned
  • 100 g pickled daikon radishes
  • Fresh cilantro
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • Fresh chili, sliced (to taste)

Method

  1. Marinate the pork slices in a mixture of soy sauce, fish sauce and sugar for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Heat a pan over medium heat and fry the marinated pork until cooked through and lightly caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Slice the baguette lengthwise and spread mayonnaise on both sides.
  4. Arrange the cooked pork on one side of the baguette.
  5. Add slices of cucumber, julienned carrots, pickled daikon radishes and fresh cilantro on top of the pork.
  6. For those who want extra heat, add fresh chili slices to taste.
  7. Place the other half of the baguette on top of the filling and press lightly together.
  8. Cut the sandwich into suitable serving portions and serve immediately.

Vegetarian version with tofu

For a vegetarian version of Banh Mi, you can replace the pork with 200 g firm tofu. Cut the tofu into thin slices and marinate it as described above. Fry the tofu slices until golden, then follow the rest of the recipe as instructed.
