Also known as Luo Han Kuo, monk fruit (monk fruit) or Siraitia Grosvenorii. Often used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been used in China, Korea and Japan for several centuries, believed to have properties to remove body heat, treat coughs, soothe sore throats and gastrointestinal problems.
Today there are many commercial forms in which Lo Han Kuo is sold. The most common commercial products on the market are ready-brewed herbal drinks or sweeteners.
Luo Han Guo is mostly sold in its dried form, as its shelf life is longer. The fruit has a slightly bitter nutty aroma and a caramel-like taste. The sweetness of the fruit is calorie-free and can be used as a substitute for sugar in cooking and baking because it is stable at high temperatures. For the same reason many find it an ideal sweetener alternative for people with diabetes, as it does not raise blood sugar.
Preparation
Crush 1 fruit into 3 L of water, bring to a boil and serve as tea.
